Having existed for more than half a century, I have witnessed the interplay of human emotions within our family, community, and society. One that intrigues me is the fact that when someone in your family is going through a difficult phase in life, we are often quick to judge. But given the same situation happening to someone else not within your immediate family, we show empathy? Why is that?
This is what I call the "empathy paradox"—a strange, very Filipino kind of contradiction . . .
